The shipping company Balearia has completed the re-powering of the ferry Naples so that it can be propelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The re-motorization has taken place in the shipyards Gibdock in Gibraltar, where the modification of the engines and the installation of the LNG tank were carried out. With a duration of three months, it was possibly the most complex and demanding project carried out by the shipyard.
With this fuel change, the Naples ferry is expected to stop emitting 9,113.45 tons of CO₂ and 871.37 tons of NOₓ annually, and to completely eliminate sulfur and particulate emissions (amounting to 75.95 tons of SOₓ ). The annual CO₂ savings would be the equivalent of the emission of 6,000 passenger cars, or planting 18,000 new trees. To achieve this, a tank with a capacity of 440 m³ had to be installed to store the LNG. The gas pipes were supplied byCryospain.
Thus, the verification of the new installation on board the Naples has been successfully completed by means of different inspection techniques of Non Destructive Testing and Gamma Radiography.
